An Inspiring Woman
In 1884, Elizabeth Hamilton Cullum called together a group of friends to discuss the possibility of a hospital designed exclusively for the treatment of cancer. A granddaughter of Alexander Hamilton, who was the first Secretary of the Treasury and a signer of the Constitution, Mrs. Cullum believed in using her influence for the greater good. She also had a personal interest in cancer; her only son died of the disease in 1882 and less than a year later, she learned that she too, had cancer.

Overcoming Fear
At that time, cancer patients were often turned away from hospitals due to lack of understanding and widespread fear of the disease. Mrs. Cullum and her friends passionately believed that cancer should be confronted rather than feared.

This shared mission moved the group, led by Mrs. Cullum, to found the New York Cancer Hospital, which would later become Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Today, Memorial Sloan Kettering is the oldest and largest privately supported cancer center in the world.

Mrs. Cullum's Legacy
Mrs. Cullum's exceptional generosity during her lifetime stands as a milestone in the history of philanthropic support for more scientific and humane care of cancer patients. Her commitment to improving cancer care prompted Mrs. Cullum to leave her entire estate to the New York Cancer Hospital, creating the first charitable legacy in the Center's history.
